It was an amazed Elizabeth Bennet that was called to the servant’s entrance that night after supper, only to be greeted by four very muddy gentlemen. Darcy was standing in front, with the others in a line behind him.

“I have come to ask for forgiveness, Miss Elizabeth,” Darcy slurred out. “And to bring you a gift.”

“You do not need to bring me a gift,” Elizabeth interjected.

“Oh, but I understand that this gift is the fastest way to gain forgiveness for my actions earlier today,” Darcy replied, pulling the frog out of his coat pocket and holding it in front of him.

Elizabeth laughed, then eyed the gentlemen behind Darcy, wondering just how many stories they had shared.

“Thank you for the gift, Mr. Darcy, now I suggest that you make your way back to Netherfield while you are still able.” Turning to the others she added, “You will make sure he makes it back safely, will you not?”

“Most definitely,” John Lucas replied.

“He is a good sport,” said Timothy Long.

“We heartily approve of your choice,” Jacob Goulding conceded.

As she watched the gentlemen all get unsteadily on their horses and ride away, she thought of her mother’s actions that morning when she overheard Mr. Darcy’s proposal. With a smile on her face, she looked at the frog now in her hands and decided there was no reason it should go to waste.

That night, the screech coming from Mrs. Bennet’s room could be heard by everyone in the house.
